Friends and Neighbors,
This is an alert for all who care about the future of Indian River County.
Tomorrow, September 9th, at 9:00 AM, the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) will discuss and vote on sweeping changes to our Comprehensive Plan. This plan is the blueprint for how our county will grow, and the proposed amendments contain several alarming changes that threaten our environment and way of life.
The proposed changes, drafted by a developer-focused consultant, include:
Moving building height limits from the Comprehensive Plan to the Land Development Regulations (LDRs). This makes it easier for future commissions to approve taller buildings with less public oversight. The LDRs can be changed easily by the Commission. The Comp Plan requires state approval.
Removing the cap on new septic system permits, endangering the health of the Indian River Lagoon. We need fewer septic permits, not more!
Weakening wetland protections by making it easier for developers to build on small wetlands.
Eliminating key policies that promote walkable, mixed-use communities.
These are just a few of the many changes that will have long-lasting consequences for our county.
We need to send a clear message to the BCC: Protect our community, not developer interests!
Please join us tomorrow morning to make your voice heard:
